Prosecutor Andrew Edis QC told the court that in February 2004, when the pair were both working at the media giant, they had been having a relationship for some years.
Brooks will stand trial alongside former managing editor Stuart Kuttner; former news editor Ian Edmondson; and Rebekah Brooks. All deny conspiracy to intercept mobile phone voicemail messages. Coulson and former NotW royal editor Clive Goodman deny charges of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office. Brooks also denies two charges of this. She also faces charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, along with former personal assistant Cheryl Carter, 49, husband Charlie Brooks, 50, and NI head of security Mark Hanna, 50.
